reward money

Question:

Hey All, Congrats to anyone who has or is in the process of quitting. Just wondering what people have spent their money on that they saved from not smoking?  And how people have rewarded themselves. The first time I quit I got a tattoo after 6 months (nothing smoking related).  I’ve just hit my one year mark (second quit attempt) and although I feel like I *could* have spent over 2000 dollars, being an unemployed student I just couldn’t bring myself to do it.  Instead I went for a much cheaper DVD/MP3 player.  I’m loving it – of course not as much as the feeling of clean clothes, mouth, fingers and lungs!  I think I"m gonna go get my teeth whitened too! Keep it up all One year, one week, three days, 10 hours, 8 minutes and 32 seconds. 5631 cigarettes not smoked, saving $2,145.27. Life saved: 2 weeks, 5 days, 13 hours, 15 minutes.

Response:

Want a full accounting or just the highlights? :) The two major things: 1.  Lemond Nevada City road bike ($1,100) 2.  Dell Dimension XPS computer ($3,300) A few other minor things along the way, in addition to the smokefree fund is paying for my monthly fitness center membership. I’ve saved $5,652, or which $480 is left.  I can attest that I’ve had a *lot* more fun spending this money on what I’ve spent rather than spending it on the continuing ruination of my health. Lee OF

labadee question

Question:

My wife and I will be visiting Labadee in February on the Explorer of the Seas. Some questions for those who have visited here before: 1. Should I leave my digital camera on board while we enjoy the beach? My thinking was I’d leave it in the safe until we were finished with our beach day then return to the ship, get the camera and return to the beach and get some pictures. Does this sound practical? How often will the tenders go back and forth to the ship? Do you have to pay to use the tenders? 2. We were planning on NOT booking any excursions for Labadee for that day. My plan is to just plunk ourselves down on the beach and enjoy. How accessible are the beach chairs? Should I plan on getting off the ship early and "grab" one or are there plenty of them around? 3. Is Labadee a place where one could wander and get some nice pictures or would you need to be wary of people bothering you? 4. I have heard that RCL serves up a BBQ. How was the food? Is there a charge for it? Does it run all day or just around lunch time? Thanks -Mike

Response:

The BBQ lunch is out for a couple of hours or so.  Great photo ops.  Beautiful spot.  Some excursions get sold out early such as parasailing and jetskies. More than enough beach loungers fewer hammocks.  I will be back there early Feb while on Brilliance.

Response:

We were just there.  Beach is beautiful, there are lots of chairs, no vendors or anyone else will bother you; there’s a craft market which you’ll probably want to peruse – no pressure.  Tenders run continuously and BBQ lunch is set up for approx. 2 hours.  No additional charge for either. Can’t tell you about food since we opted to have lunch back on the ship. They have the ribs on the ship’s buffet also?  I did not know that.  Thanks. Chris

Response:

Labadee is actually a tiny peninsula off the coast of Haiti. There are 2 sides to the peninsula (obviously).  The ocean side and a protected side.  Most of the people go into the water on the protected side. There are several pretty coves.  Lots of lounge chairs.  The ocean side is much rougher, with signs warning people of things like ocean wildlife, rough surf, etc.  There are a few people that will go on the water on the ocean side, but most stay on the protected side. I’m not sure what time you’ll want to be at the beach.  If you won’t all be in the water at the same time, just bring the camera with you.  If everyone wants to be in the water at the same time, I think it might be better to catch the first tender for photos, and then go back to the ship and get everyone else.  Because of the sun’s angles, I’d suggest pics in the morning rather than toward the end of the day. The beaches there are nice, but it’s not a great place for water like the US Virgin Islands or Cayman.  The two times I was to Labadee the water had very limited visibility.  No coral and you really can’t see fish if the water is cloudy.  It’s more a beach day than a snorkeling day. The best place for photos is the path that goes along the protected side. And make sure you go way out to the point to hear the dragon’s breath. –Tom

The two times * I * was there, more than one member of my family got bitten by jellyfish (the first time it was my husband and son, the second time me and my daughter — equal opportunity jellyfish, apparently)…not horrible, but certainly annoying.  The water is clean enough and sure * looks * inviting, but from now on, if I’m in Labadee it’s OUT of the water. There are more than enough lounge chairs and lots of shade and sun.  I didn’t find the bar-b-que buffet all that appetizing, but it’s certainly edible.  I’ve never really even given thought to not bringing my camera, I just pack it up and put it out of sight when we’re doing other activities.  I’m sure I’m naive, but luckily haven’t yet been ripped off. ~ Peri

OOPS hit sent before I was done. >How often will the tenders go back and forth to the ship?

They continuosly go back and forth BUT the tenders are HUGE and can take 35 minutes or so to fill, Do you have to pay to use the tenders? No absolutely not 2. We were planning on NOT booking any excursions for Labadee for that day. My plan is to just plunk ourselves down on the beach and enjoy. How accessible are the beach chairs? Very Accessible, We like going to Barefoot beach, but the last beach near dragon rock is great, seems as though the first beach has lots of families. they also have a shuttle that goes from the tender pier to all the beaches and back all day,  Should I plan on getting off the ship early and "grab" one or are there plenty of them around? The early bird gets the best location i think 3. Is Labadee a place where one could wander and get some nice pictures or would you need to be wary of people bothering you? You can wander and not be bothered. they do hav trails and paths and great photo Ops 4. I have heard that RCL serves up a BBQ. How was the food? We thought it was very good. something for everyone . Typical BBQ good ribs when we were on there last month, better then in previous months. there is also chicken burgers and Hot dogs, salads and condiments and  desserts.  Fruit Punch and water too  adn soda for purchase  Does it run all day or just Runs for a good part of the day  From early Lunch time til  a little while before the last tender to get them time to clean up Its Free Susette Join us on our Annual Group Cruise 04Dec04 Jewel of the Seas! I have been to Labadee a few times and never saw Jellyfish there. Not much of any fish for that matter. :(  But of course they could be anywhere from time to time. Hi mgb, They will have the ferry’s running all day, but it does take time, don’t think I’d advise going back to the ship for the digital camera and then back to the beach.  We just buy a disposible underwater camera and use it for days like that, just don’t want to worry about loosing the good camera. We also pre-booked the waverunner excursion on-line before we left and glad we did, it does fill up and is tons of fun.  I’d also suggest pre-booking a water mat, they are great for in the water and on the beach and they also sell out of those quickly, cost was $10 for the entire day, very worth it.  There is plenty of areas to wonder around and take nice pics, a few different areas where you can get your BBQ lunch and drinks throughout the day. There is also an area where they have some local merchants selling their wares, beware, quite a few of them can get very agressive, that just completely turns me off and I walked out.  Too bad, I would of bought something, there were some very interesting things, but I just don’t like being dragged down an isle to look at what they have and forced to purchase something, reminded me of being in Jamaica…. Its a great beach day, I always enjoy those lazy days at a beautiful beach, enjoy. Donna Tuesday Chat Host http://www.cruisemates.com

~ Peri

How come I can't seem to get a photo of my back tattoo in focus?

Question:

Every time I try it comes out fuzzy.  It wasn’t happening with the digital camera so I tried with the old 35mm… and it comes out fuzzy again! Drat, curses etc etc. Anyway, this is still out of focus but it’s the best I have — http://homepage.ntlworld.com/clearwater/orange.gif — quite a lot of detail is lost.  For example, you can’t really see that the stamens are highlighted at the tips in red, or the shadow effects of the watershading between & around the flowers and leaves. The photo is out of focus. Either the photographer didn’t focus properly or was too close for the lens used. Besides, to show the detail in your flower one would have to be closer than was used in your posted photo. Fill the frame with the flower and then see if it can be focused. If it can’t, you may need one of two things, a MACRO LENS that can focus at closer distances than your regular lens OR perhaps a Diopter that you can put over your regular lens to also allow the lens to focus at those closer distances. Many digital cameras are autofocus and have a macro feature so they can focus at those closer distances. Why not take the photo with the digital camera and take the images on the card to a Sam’s. The prints they do are every bit as good as film camera prints. — Robbie

Isn’t that thing that I want a cig? Yes yes yes! I spent the next few seconds imagining actually having a cig. That it wouldn’t really make the dinner feel any more complete. Call your Doctor.  In my clinic I can call & speak to my Dr’s nurse anytime & then she relays the message & gets back to me.  I had the same thing happen when waiting for liver function tests.  The clinic schedules an appointment with a liver specialist due to test results.  Got me thinking –WHAT THE HELL DID THE TEST RESULTS SHOW??????  Then the clinic calls & puts off the specialist’s appointment another week.  After stewing a day I called my doctor.  He put my mind at ease….the test results were normal.  If I would have had to live with the doubt for a week it would have killed me. I was an emotional wreck after one day. Call your doctor and ask why the appointment.  Put your mind at ease. The doc will bill healthcare for the phone call, so you’re not asking for a favour.  You’re asking him to do his job. Good luck, andn …….yeah……dont’ worry!! ;-P DG

Response:

Sorry, folks, this one is boooring… The day started at 3:30 a.m. in Albuquerque.  My wife (bless her) woke up before me and put the coffee on.  She got me up, but I had only had a few hours of sleep.  For some reason, I could not sleep last night, so I didn’t get to bed until after 1:00 a.m. I then had a horrifying discovery that woke me right up… I tried to fire up my laptop, so I could download my email before departing, and it was stone-cold dead.  No lights, no nothing.  I got out my backup laptop, but discovered that it was not up-to-date.  No Linux installed, none of my perl scripts that I had been writing for the client, nada.  Argh.  Backups.  Yes.  Backups good.  No got.  Bad. Give me coffee and a cigarette on the balcony. Somehow, after unplugging the power and removing the battery from my Vaio, it started working again.  Sigh of relief.  No idea why it was not working, or why it just started working again.  I’m just glad that it *is* working.  Pack the laptop, get the rest of the packing done. Get shower, more coffee, get dressed, head out for the airport at 4:30.  Got a 6:15 flight, but also, the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta just ended, so I knew the airport would be full of "I never fly and don’t know how to get on a plane" types. I was right, but it was not as bad as last year, perhaps because my flight was much earlier this time around.  Got my boarding pass with no problem, one checked bag.  I use a plastic security tie now instead of a lock, and the TSA goons seldom molest my bag anymore.  Had to fly AA instead of HP, because the ticket price difference was nearly $400.  Gotta save the client money if we can… AA 1046, 6:13 a.m. in an MD-80.  Not bad, I got an exit row.  This does not recline, but I don’t usually mind that, and there was lots of leg-room.  Not that it mattered, I was out cold the moment I sat down.  Don’t recall take-off or even landing this time.  I woke up when people started getting off the plane. Had a two-hour layover in ORD, which is fine.  My flight in docked at gate H5, and my departing flight was due to move out from gate H3, which is fine.  It could well have been a mile away, though, so the two-hour layover makes sense to me.  I went outside and had a smoke, then grabbed lunch at the food court at Micky D’s. AA 1962, 12:11 p.m. in a Fokker F-100.  Not too bad, it’s kind of like a very short 737.  I was in 8F.  The seat in front of me got the full recline treatment, but I didn’t know or care – once again, I was out cold pretty much from start to finish.  I know I must have snored like crazy – I woke up with a sore throat and people staring at me. Hehehehe.  Besides, there was nothing I could have done anyway – for some reason, my row was 3 big dudes, and I was the tiny one in the group.  None of us could move a muscle, we were hemmed in. Got into RDU a few minutes late, at about 3:10 p.m.  I walked out through security, and noticed that the TSA has no one guarding the exit – anyone could walk in through the ‘out’ gate.  True, it is an ‘automatic door’ that opens and closes, but anyone could wait until it opens and then walk out through it.  I looked around for someone to ask, but saw no security or police of any kind.  Shrugged and went down to get my bag. That’s where I saw this: http://www.growlery.com/bad_day_at_rdu_airport.htm I was waiting for my bag to come out the chute, and I notice that some guy’s leather suiter had come apart somehow.  The leather looked new, but it was torn up pretty badly.  The guy’s suits had come out, and bits and pieces were strewn about.  Sad – I was sure glad it wasn’t mine.  I whipped out my digital camera and got a few pictures (see link above), but they turned out pretty fuzzy – I guess I still hadn’t woken up! My bag arrived, I got my rental car, and drove out to Wilson, NC.  I’m holed up at the Holiday Inn Express now (there is no Marriott out this way), and now I gotta get some sleep – I’m beat. All in all, no problems to report.  Just some poor guy’s luggage that got torn up, apparently by the airline.  Lesson – leather suiters not a good idea for checked luggage. Best Regards, Bill Mattocks

Of course its a difficult situation, the manager will have to weigh up his knowledge of his techies and you as a customer. What car it is, did you by it from him, how old etc etc. Plus the sucker punch, does he feel he will lose a potential new sale to you and all the associated service work. If they definitely did it, tell them! and highlight the potential lose of your business. Good Luck Silver

Response:

This happened to me about 2 years ago.  The Service Manager and I reviewed the check-in chart and it was clear they had done it (in this case a couple of big dents).  The Service Manager made a deal with me to repair the dents and arranged for a bunch of door dings to be taken out at his cost.  I walked away happy.  I recommend speaking with the manager and reviewing any check-in records they might have.  Also, if you have any dated evidence (pictures, preferrably) of the car without the damage, you’re in great luck.  Good luck to you. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Hi, > I gave my E46 318i in to the new Scotthall BMW dealer on Saturday for a > routine service, however, I have just had a look at the car and there is a > scratch on the bonnet (near the BMW Badge) which was not there before I gave > it in for a service.  What do dealers normally do in these cases? > Thanks

I would talk to the manager and than move on the local GM and than the local owner.  After all that you will not be bringing your business back than make some noise standing in the bay where customers are checking in their cars for daily service. I might even tell a few if you strike out to take a note of the body condition before leaving the car behind. Yopefully the 2 or rd level of management will recognize that if you took the time to track them down, you must not be lying. later

Response:

I agree with Sharma.  That is the orderly way of handling this sort of problem.  The manager has more latitude and authority to handle situations where there may be no written rules or warranties.  Lower level staff have no room to negotiate so it’s a waste of your time and theirs to debate the issue.  I would just politely ask to speak with the manager.  If the scratches are minor they can fix it so it looks perfect.  Someone may have closed the lid using a hand that had ring on a finger. BTW, I always bring my digital camera with me when I leave my car for any work – even if it is for a few minutes.  Garages are busy and crowded places – accidents happen all the time.  I take pictures of the whole car at various angles and include a single detailed shot of each wheel before I hand over the keys.  I do it right inside the dealership service ramp right in front of everyone. I was able to nail someone with this technique once.  It was not a BMW dealer but a car rental outfit.  Someone took the car I returned for a joy ride after I returned it on a weekend and they were trying to claim the extra mileage on the following Monday.  I always take pictures of the car with surrounding background so there’s no mistake where and when the photos were taken. Digital cameras are really handy – new ones cost as low as USD 100. They keep quiet and hope the client does not notice. I once had a bonnet slightly dented by a renault mechanic. I noticed, they promised to remove the dent and respray the bonnet. Then they noticed that the dent was very hard to remove, so I got a new bonnet (which was no benefit for me, because the new one performed exactly the same way the old one used to). — please replace spam-muelleimer with fk-newsgroups for e-mail contact Time Flies Like An Arrow – Fruit Flies Like A Banana

Vertical Bridge

Question:

I’m interested in having a vertical bridge piercing done, but I’m having some  trouble – i can’t find a place to do it. I’ve already called venus and they said they’d do it with a straight bar (hello rejection) and ny adorned doesn’t do surface piercings. Pleasurable said they’d try it with pfte but it would be the piercer’s first time and I don’t know if I’ll be able to get there as it’s about an hour away. Tribal Ways in boston will do it but with a curved barbell, not a surface bar, and the guy was snooty on the phone. Masterpiece in framingham, mass. said to call back tomorrow and talk to rob but i don’t know if that’ll pan out. Keith, do you do them? I tried calling your shop but I don’t think I had the right number. It looks like I may have to wait for a convention or something to find someone qualified and experienced who will do it with a surface bar. Which is ok, but if anyone can suggest any other options for nj, ny, or mass., I’d really appreciate it. Cylence

Cylence, one thing that I hate about myself or would like to change is that I often say, "Oh, I’m going to do this…" and then don’t actually do it. Plans schmans. Procrastination sucks the big one. I think that you have the same problem. You’re all talk. Now it can be good to talk, but it’s also good to take action. Here’s my action: (which is, yeah, actually another example of "Oh, I’m going to do this…") If you get the vertical bridge, I’ll send $20.00 (U.S. money order) to the address of your choice. Stipulations? Yeah. Post a URL to r.a.b with a good pic (at least 640×480 pixels in size with the bridge of your nose and its brandy new piercing being the primary focus of said pic) of you holding a current USA Today or a Time magazine. I’m not asking you to spend money on a newspaper or a magazine. Just take your or a friend’s digital camera to a newsstand. Response:

> qualified and experienced who will do it with a surface bar.

A surface bar may not necessarily be the best piece of jewelry for this piercing. It really depends upon the shape of your nose/head, and exactly where youw ant to do it. And, even with a surface bar, that piece of jewelry may still need to be tweaked to give you any real benefit.  A curved barbell may not be a bad option for you. Just keep in mind that while surface bars are a GoodThing(tm) when used appropriately and used for the right piercing, they aren’t some sort of magical piece of jewelry that guarantees your surface piercing is going to heal. In fact, the odds are still in favor of the piercing rejecting within the first year. Best of luck. Derek

Or talking to people with "odd" or "unusual" piercings about where they got them done and whether they were happy with them?
