why not mpg?

Question:

There are a bunch of different "avi" formats as well as mpg formats, but this program might work. But either way, don’t go to too much trouble just for my sake… Was just giving you my opinion since i am to lazy to download quicktime… http://www.webattack.com/get/tmpegenc.shtml – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> OK, smart guy, then how do I *get* anything into MPG? OK, smart guy, then how do I *get* anything into MPG? I’m a web designer and used to using all kinds of web technology, but when I tried to figure out something as "simple" as converting AVI to other formats, I hit a brick wall. I tried a few converter programs but they didn’t work — especially not for MPG. Every time I run it, it ends up as a 0 byte file. Frustrated, I talked to a guy at work who’s done a lot of multimedia production and he said I should get QuickTime Pro. I did and a minute later, it converted to QuickTime with a very nice download time, no problem. I also was able to create sound files. However, when I tried to get QT to expoert to "MPG+4," I get the 0 byte file — won’t do it. I looked all over for information explaining how to do the conversion but so none of that info. had been useful to me personally whereas the other was a snap. Wiebke P.S.         Check out <http://www.vcdhelp.com>. Best site I know of for help on video conversions, with links to many excellent (and frequently free!) software packages for doing various conversions.                                                 Kayembee

First of all, I was kidding (mostly) about Apple.  But they do keep very tight reigns on the MOV format in order to force Windows users to install QuickTime.  It’s the same game Real Networks plays. Also, there’s nothing magical about producing MPG files.  MPG is a compression of AVI, not a conversion.  If you were getting 0 byte files it means your AVIs were either already compressed or were recorded with incorrect parameters. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > OK, smart guy, then how do I *get* anything into MPG? I kind of wanted to see the videos, but after realizing i’d have to download quicktime i didn’t bother. Please use mpg in the future its more universal, or maybe even use microsoft’s asf format high compression. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> Hi, > Well, after a little trial and error, I’ve managed to convert the > little digital movies I made of my budgies into QuickTime so I could > put them on the web. Actually, there is no such thing as a "universal" format :) Take it from a web designer, there isn’t universial *anything* when it comes to the web. My opinion (and if this helps, I am in a fact a pro web designer, not counting that page) is that with so much stuff in QuickTime and the ease with which you can get the player (I even put the link on the site), the format was OK. For future, I guess sometime or other I could export my movies into several other formats and put them up, but for now… nah. NO NO NO NO NO NO Apple is evil.  QuickTime is evil.  Any format that requires a specific player is evil.  Stick to mpg and other OPEN formats where people can choose their own player. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Actually, there is no such thing as a "universal" format :) Take it > from a web designer, there isn’t universial *anything* when it comes > to the web. > My opinion (and if this helps, I am in a fact a pro web designer, not > counting that page) is that with so much stuff in QuickTime and the > ease with which you can get the player (I even put the link on the > site), the format was OK. > For future, I guess sometime or other I could export my movies into > several other formats and put them up, but for now… nah. > Wiebke > I kind of wanted to see the videos, but after realizing i’d have to > download quicktime i didn’t bother. > Please use mpg in the future its more universal, or maybe even use > microsoft’s asf format high compression. > > Hi, > > Well, after a little trial and error, I’ve managed to convert the > > little digital movies I made of my budgies into QuickTime so I could > > put them on the web. Lets see easy to download or already have.  Not to mention EVERY DVD in the world is in mpg format if that helps you decide… all windows machines can play mpgs out of the box and i am sure thats the same for macs also. Now quicktime all macs can play that out of the box, but 90% of the world that uses windows has to download some bloated movie program. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> Actually, there is no such thing as a "universal" format :) Take it > from a web designer, there isn’t universial *anything* when it comes > to the web.
