Where to buy Digital Camcorder in Eurepe
Question:
> I live in the UK but I’d like to buy a digital camcorder. > Would the tax havens be a good bet, e.g. Switzerland, Jersey, etc.? > Or are the savings not enough to get excited about?
Generally, things are cheap in places where people are poor. People in tax havens are generally *not* poor. My general best bet on buying things cheap would be eastern Europe, but I do not know whether this applies to camcorders, too. > Any suggestions welcome.
Take your time to compare prices at home. Learn what’s compatible to what. Go on holiday whereever you want and look if you can get a bargain there (with the current exchange rates you might get lucky). Don’t spend your holiday in Hellhole, Nowwhere because you might save a few pounds on a camcorder there. Buy the best you can get in your price range. inge — I used to drive a Heisenbergmobile, but every time I looked at the speedometer, I got lost.
Response:
Try Andorra, Livigno, Las Canarias, maybe Luxembourg. Stay away from Belgium and the Scandinavian countries. A product that costs 100EUR in Belgium will cost about 66EUR in Livigno or Andorra. Joeri (Belgium)

Response:
Does Jersey use the same standard as Great Britain? I assume it does.

I still have to see anything cheap in Switzerland.
Response:
Even being poor in Switzerland takes a lot of money

I bought an Omega watch cheaply at Zurich airport 3 years ago. About 40% cheaper than UK. Obviously I declared it to the customs man at Heathrow airport when I came home and paid all the import duty, VAT, etc. immediately. I wouldn’t want to be accused of smuggling now, would I???

IMO this is not a good idea, because the UK uses a different TV standard than the "rest of Europe" (which actually has at least another 3 standards…). Same thing to the power supply’s plug. So you will get a "local" model, which you can’t use at home. In case you order a "foreign" model, the advantage of the price (if there is any at all) will be gone. Roland

Response:
Recently, I went looking for a digital camera in Andorra. To my surprise, the prices were higher than I would pay in the U.S. While some items are cheaper there, electronics were not among them. Skis and related equipment such as boots are a good deal there. A friend bought Technica boots in Aspen (I know) for $700. The same boots in Andorra were 250 Euros. What a difference. Clothing, however, was no deal.
