Took Delivery Today!! (330Ci)

Question:

Hi all, Just a quick note. I picked up my new 330Ci today (well yesterday as it’s past midnight now). Config: 330Ci, titanium silver, anthracite cloth/leather combo seat, sport pack (with sport seats and Style 96 rims), DSC, HK, 5spd. Those are the only options I chose as sunroof, bi-xenon, heated seats are standard in Canada. Quick thoughts: LOVE the way it looks, drove it around for a couple hours and still getting used to the different clutch feel (from my Mustang GT 5.0L), it came with Dunlop SP Sport tires (any comments on those?), very smooth, quite a different overall feeling than my Stang GT but drives great so far. Only down side to the day was freakin rock chip on the hood FIRST DAY! I’m pretty sure it wasn’t there when I took delivery because I checked it out pretty well but I MAY have missed it. Am I the only one who got a rock chip first day?? Should I ask the dealer if they can touch it up? Salesrep said break in for first 2000 kms, don’t go over 4500 RPM, but vary revs below and upto that level. Does that match what you all have been told for this model? Oh before anyone mentions it, I do plan on going through the owners manual over then next week or so. No first aid kit or safety triangle which I thought Canadian BMW’s came with. Got the tool kit and flashlight though. Overall though, I like it very much…worth the wait!

Response:

I’m just curious, how would you compare it to the mustang (the driveability, handling, acceleration etc)? What advantages and more interestingly…disadvantages do you see it having over the mustang? Thanks

Your car sounds fantastic, just check underneth your passenger seat for the first aid kit, I’m sure that should be there, not sure, but have a look, I only found mine a few weeks after having the car while searching for my mobile phone under the seat. You can fashoin your self an extended clutch stop pad and that will make the clutch trow alot shorter also, I removed the clutch check valve that ads hesitation to your shifts ( the M3 do not have it ) you will find a major improvement.

I am still waiting for my Compact, and it looks like I have another 2 weeks to go!

Yep, generally accelerate as hard as you like but keep the revs down to begin with.  Gradually start to increase the revs after a while.  Wait for the engine to warm up before you go too crazy.  Engines get stronger after they’ve had many heat-up cool-down cycles.

Oh Dunlop Sp sport tires are original equipment on most beemers, I have put them back on mine (after the last cheap skate owner of my car put rubbish on it), they seem very good, and our weather is worse than yours.

Hi, I’ll try to make a few comparisons, but keep in mind I’ve only driven the BMW about 140 kms so far (it had 30 kms when I picked it up). Initial thoughts both objective and subjective) compared to my 1994 Mustang GT 5spd: Advantages: -a little better fuel economy -less jarring suspension/ride…it is still tight and firm, but handles uneven surfaces much better than the Stangs’ live rear axle -sunroof…I like sunroofs and mustangs after ‘93 don’t have that option (small detail though) -handling seems a fair bit better and quite a bit more balanced -love the xenon lighting..Mustang lighting is below average I think -styling…330Ci combination of smooth lines while retaining a muscular look was exactly what I was looking for -more legroom Disadvantages: -no 5.0 L engine growl…having come from a 90 GT 5.0 and my 94 GT 5.0 I do love the V8 sound, but each time I drive the BMW my ears are enjoying that precision German I6 engine sound as it’s tame at start up and idle, but it can roar when you step on it (though I haven’t gone over 4500rpm) -acceleration will be slightly behind that of 87-93 and 99+ Mustang GT…I’m coming from 5.0 Stangs and I’m more than happy with the acceleration (though I haven’t truely stepped on it yet). -shifter has reverse located upper/left..I like it down/right, but perhaps I’m just used to that -less headroom -price..’nuff said Overall I like them both very much. I still love the Mustangs, but I had been driving a 90 GT for 6 years then the 9 GT for 4 years or so and felt it was time for a change. I wanted something more refined, but still wanted a muscular look (I’ve always been a muscle car guy I guess), high performance, better fuel economy. The ONLY car  found that I liked enough to replace the Mustang was the 330Ci. I even had second thoughts and test drove a 2001 Mustang SVT Cobra. It was loud, super powerful, super fast, looked mean and agressive, but it also confirmed that I wanted more of an "overall" driving experience than straight line prowess. Anyways, those are just a few comments and I’m sure I’ll have much more to say after I drive it more. Hope that helps! Dylan Vancouver, Canada

I looked today. Nothing there :-( I even asked a service guy and a manager at the dealer and they both told me no first aid kit. I know the US doesn’t get it, but I had thought UK and Canada do…oh well, no biggie.

Yeah, I had heard about the clutch stop idea on here before. I’ll wait till I drive it more, but I will surely keep that in mind. I’m not sure what the clutch check valve is actually. What does it do? Thanks.

Thanks! Two more weeks for ya? Getting close! I’m in Canada, therefore we use kms. Interesting thing is that every Canadian car I’ve ever seen with the speedometre in kms also has a smaller inner circle with MPH listed. I drive down into Washington state often and like to refer to the MPH when in the US, but the BMW has km/h only. Not a big deal, just nitpicking.

You know it! I already have a few from day one, but they didn’t turn out very well due to dusk confusing my camera. I’ll take some more soon. Could anyone direct me to a good free place to host them? I used Yahoo Photos before, but they only show a low res pic. Thanks!

My guess is that BMW tries to save by putting European instrument clusters for Canadian bound cars instead of creating a special one with MPH for a small market Canada does seem to get a mix of European and North American Spec mix! – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >Thanks! I just purchased a 330ci (2001, never owned) about 2 months ago and they told me the same thing about breaking in the engine.  They also said that during the break-in period not to use the speed control, which seems pretty obvious. In terms of your rock chip, a friend of mine has a Mercedes SLK and got some type of 3M plastic-ish coating for the front.  The coating is like a clear bra but is glued on and guaranteed against chipping or your lights getting cracked or broken.  I looked into it for my 330ci and the price is not too bad, somewhere around $350 canadian, and it does carry a guarantee if your lights get broken by a rock (great for the Xenon) or the front gets chipped.  You can hardly notice the coating unless you look closely at the car and the guy I spoke with said it doesn’t fade the colour or destroy the paint. Anyhow, have fun with your car, I just broke my engine in recently and what a blast it’s been to drive. Narry – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Hi all, > Just a quick note. Two words:  You Suck! :-) My 330ci goes to the assembly line in the next few days, so I’ve still got a while to wait yet :-(  But it’ll make a nice birthday present! I did, however, get a chance to run an M3 through the paces yesterday afternoon.  Now THAT was fun.  Only had 30 minutes in the car, but what a riot! Just made me want my car all the more, tho. Enjoy!    -a.

I received my 2002 330CI in Dec. Also with sports package, larger wheels and tires on the rear. It didn’t come with those tires. I got Continental ContiSportContacts. Who decides what brand of tires you get? The dealer? PS. I have had to replace two of them. Both went flat two days apart. Pulled out broken-off box cutter blades out of each one. Tire guys says it could be because we just had all our carpets replaced and the blades are used by carpet guys who were in our driveway a month before we bought the house, couldn’t find any in the driveway though, maybe someone doesn’t like me. — Dale Ireland 47.7N 122.7W Astronomy Page http://www.drdale.com
