Replacing a Door?

An alternative to Home Depot is a lumber yard. We bought some french doors from a local lumber yard that did mill work. We gave them the old doors, and they installed all the hardware on the new doors so that it matched the old ones. They charged around $15 for this.

The easiest way to do this is to clamp the new door to the old, lay try-square on the edge, and draw lines across the new door end matching the location of the hinges on the old door.
Response:
just go buy a pre-hung steel clad door for about $200 and lag bolt it right into the old jamb. A little caulk and "Presto!" you’re done

I need to replace a door from my garage to the outside. I have considered replacing door and frame but I do not feel I have the skill to pull that off neatly. I think I am going to opt to just replace the door itself. My problem is figuring out how to get the holes for the hinges aligned just right on the new door. Does anyone know a link to someplace that address this or know of a book that shows how? Thanks Mike
Response:
It’s probably cheaper to replace just a door but not necessarily easier. The newer door kits need only a rough opening and they practically hang themselves (if it’s an ordinary size door). Putting hinges onto a door might not be so simple or cheap. You might need to buy tools you won’t use for anything else too. First thing: measure CAREFULLY, all the door dimensions and where the hardware is. Thickness of door counts. Width of areas where locks and hinges are count too. Take all measurements and go to local home improvement center and see if they have someone who can advise. My local Home Depot has lots of staff with contractor background. It’s times like this you know a digital camera is not just for vacations. You could show the person at Home Depot exactly what you’re talking about. The Home Depot home repair book is one of the best, IMHO. Look up the job and study what’s involved. Good pics, good advice. —
