There are also plans to build a second : East-West runway, but the locals aren’t liking the idea much. I live in New Orleans, and know about both main runways, but was not sure both were currently in service; there was a runway repair going on at one time. As for the proposal to build a new East-West runway, and locals not liking it, the real problem over the years has been that the airport is in Jefferson Parish but virtually on the edge of St. Charles Parish to the west. The new runway, or any extension of the existing E-W runway, would encroach literally on land in the swamps in St. Charles Parish, but also would increase the air traffic over the parish. The swamp there is a spectacular thing, as Steve Howie pointed out. There’s a constant struggle over the area’s environment….though two interstate portions have been built through the swamps, one in the 60s and another in the 80s. Another interesting MSY airport fact that has contributed to some service problems on the East-West runway: a tunnel was dug under the runway many years back for a proposed new airport access road, but the project collapsed and the giant tunnel sits there, fills with water on occasion and causes some mild runway subsidence that has to be fixed. There’s a similar tunnel in downtown New Orleans under Canal Street adjacent to the river, which was abandoned when a riverfront expressway project was terminated in the 1960s over historic preservation grounds. We saw television footage here in New Orleans just now of the Lakefront Airport, and mostly general aviation and military reserve facility–much of the airport appears to be flooded, with from 2 to 4 feet of water standing as far as the camera could show….there are some higher areas near the terminal I think that may be ok. Despite New Orleans escaping the worst of Hurricane Georges, we also saw on local news that fishing camps, restaurants, the Amtrak line out of the city to the east and a great many other lakefront properties are under water and suffering damage. So far only two reported deaths in New Orleans due to the storm. C.Smith

Does anyone know of damage to St Bernard area just outside of New Orleans?

Anyone scheduled to fly in/out of MSY today? I was really surprised to hear that the airport was closed this morning when the hurricane was still more than 200 miles away. After Southwest Airlines and possibly others brought in additional equipment yesterday to get the hurricane evacuees out, you were s.o.l. if you waited until today. I just returned from a weekend in Dallas, and my hotel filled up quickly last night with families from New Orleans. Smith/McGrath and any others from N.O., I hope you make it safely through the storm.

We decided to stay put during this storm, and spent the last two days preparing. At this time (around 7:45 p.m. CDT) it looks possible that New Orleans (and MSY) may escape the worst of the hurricane, though it promises to be a long night and next day. As for closing MSY this morning, since there was not a home Saints game (they won at Indianapolis to go 3-0, which is pretty rare for us), and some local events and conventions had cancelled early, meaning a pretty light Sunday at the airport, it didn’t much surprise me that the airport closed early. Since there’s only the East-west and North-south runways (are they both in service these days?), any significant sustained winds from the direction we’ve been seeing winds all day (northeast, primarily) would make takeoffs pretty wild, I imagine. We know several people who, having decided yesterday to evacuate to Dallas or Atlanta, flew out last night when things were still pretty calm. Most of the traffic heading out today seemed to be auto traffic on the Interstates, which were flowing pretty well in spite of the situation. All the Interstates and major bridge crossings were closed by state and local police mid-afternoon. At the Tulane-Navy football game in the Superdome yesterday, I met many Navy fans in town for the game, quite a few of whom were trying to arrange earlier flights out of town than planned before the hurricane closed the airport. By the way, regarding MSY, I think I read this week that Delta was finally moving into their new ticketing counters in the D terminal. > Smith/McGrath and any others from N.O., I hope you make it safely > through the storm.
Thanks for your wishes. We’re amazed that power is still on and I’m posting messages like this one. Chris Smith

I guess airlines wanted to make sure they had no planes left at New Orleans airport. Just how vulnerable to floods is the airport ?

Well, the elevation of the airport is just 6 feet above sea level…I’m sure that doesn’t help! There are some parts of New Orleans and southeastern Louisiana that are actually below sea level, and so there’s been a lot of warning about widespread damage due to storm surges.

Georges must be having a financial impact on Delta (not to mention playing havoc with the airline’s schedule) since (based on the last report I saw on The Weather Channel last night) the storm is not only threatening MSY but also Mobile and Pensacola. Sunday afternoon TWC reported the Floria Panhandle had wind gusts of over 50 mph. Surely the Pensacola airport was closed then. Maybe this is more noticeable because Georges is moving so slowly. But even if the airports weren’t closed, would *anyone* really want to fly into New Orleans, Pensacola or Mobile in a plane likely to encounter wind gusts greater than 50 mph? –Dennis
Response:
It appears New Orleans escaped the worst of the storm (as of this morning, about 8:10 a.m. CDT). One interesting note about MSY: for the first time ever, the airport was used by the local authorities as a hurricane shelter; I heard an official report this morning that 700-900 people were being housed in one of the terminals. I don’t know if these are people waiting for flights to resume, but got the impression it was not, but rather was local citizens who had to leave their homes. We heard a report of a 165-mile wind gust at the airbase in Biloxi around 4 a.m. this morning, so areas east of New Orleans are certainly having a rough time. Pensacola, which you mentioned, appeared to me to be getting the worst rainfall all day yesterday, and may have sustained some significant flooding. C.Smith

When Frances hit Texas, New Orleans ended up getting a *LOT* of rain, and there was major flooding, including the closure of most roads, but the airport operated without significant delay. That was a Friday afternoon, and the whole thing caught us by surprise, everybody had gone to work and school, and by noon, businesses and schools were closing in the middle of the day, making a real mess as people tried to get home and get their kids home from school. Also, being a Friday afternoon, there were of course a lot of people heading home after a week of work, but I work with many people who got out of the airport that Friday afternoon, and some ended up getting out early since they feared the worst and got to the airport early.

There’s also a North-east-South-west small runway for light planes, but I’ve never seen it used, all light planes I’ve seen use on of the two main runways. For individuals there is a shuttle available $10 as I remember. Since Taxis are $22 the benefits for two are minimal. I was just there. There is a shuttle bus ride to rental cars, and a rather long walk (150m?) from UA baggage to the pickup point. (Another poster indicated UA handles AC there.) There is no UA lounge there so unless AC has made other arrangements you’ll be with the hoi polloi. It’s actually a very pleasant airport and I recommend the Andouille po-boy at the restaurant just past the UA gates.

I know they have counters in the airport, but I can’t tell you where they keep the cars since I’ve never rented when I visited there. > How long to get to downtown New Orleans? We arrive at 13:00 on Dec 30.
Took us about 20 minutes by shuttle bus. > Does Air Canada have a lounge for on our return trip? Or do they > have us use United’s? We are going business class on my air miles.
United does the check-in and other ground related things. (AC only has one flight per day.) > Suggestions for things to do, places to eat, and places to see are > most welcome. The only night we are staying in NO is Jan 3 at the > Ramada. The other nights are in Biloxi. We are mid 40’s.
There are 4 Ramadas "downtown", 2 are in the French Quarter. Another close to the superdome and the fourth is in the garden district. The obviours – the French quarter. Riverwalk(shopping and walk along the harbour.) Harrah’s Casino. The Aquarium. (all are walkable if you are staying the Quarter.) There are swamp tours, Cemetery tours, a zoo and museums. The "trolley" streetcar ride to the Garden district is nice. (there’s one that runs along the river as well.) Lots of food & drink in the Quarter. I’ll leave it to the locals to recommend their faves. Grab the AAA – Alambama, Louisana & Mississippi Tour book and maps from CAA. It’s a starting point with some general things. The Maps will come in handy as the rental car places won’t have any detailed ones. You can then go to www.bigeasy.com for more info.

Hi and welcome to our unique city. I think you may have to take a shuttle since I do a lot of planespotting near the airport and I see most of the car rental agencies are offsite. http://makeashorterlink.com/?P20C21462 You may want to check MSY airport website for more info. http://www.flymsy.com/ Downtown New Orleans is about 15 miles from the Airport. Hmmm, things to do in New Orleans. Well, there’s the huge Harrah’s Casino right on Canal Street at the River. http://www.harrahs.com/our_casinos/nor/ There’s the Riverwalk. http://www.riverwalkmarketplace.com/ There’s Jax Brewery next to the French Quarter http://www.jacksonbrewery.com/ — Andy P.
