Harry's Bar

Question:

A friend of ours that toured Venice last year told us to be sure to goto Harry’s Bar.  All the Hollywoodites go there, famous folks from the past have been there, even movies done there etc. Anyone here been there in Venice during a Med cruse or land vacation?

Response:

Brenda, I’ve been there many times.  It’s a 5 minute walk from the square.  Very chic and, even for Venice, very expensive. I wouldn’t go so far as to call it a tourist trap, but let’s just say Harry’s is not a stop for the locals or any real "Hollywoodites".  It’s more like a stop for the wanna-bes If you go, take lots and lots of money and a camera. Paul

I went to Harry’s Bar about two years ago. It has been there a long time as my parents visited in the ’60s and said it was expensive then. I can confirm first hand that it is very expensive ….. in the order of $12 per drink. You can also eat dinner there, but given the cost of the drinks, we declined on that. I believe the story is that Hemingway drank there, but I may have it wrong. Still, its probably worth going just to say you did. Almost everything in Venice is expensive. But there are so many interesting sights, its not to be missed. Robert

Robert, You’re correct – Hemmingway drank there and they still have his stool at the bar. An average dinner at Harry’s will run about $100 per person (not including those $12 drinks).  I have paid $100 for a dining experience before (New York, London, Taipei, Oslo), and they’ve been significantly better than Harry’s. Venice is expensive, but Harry’s borders on price gouging. Paul

Been to "VENICE",and found much more interesting things to do then sit in a bar,and pay $12.00 for a drink, can go to key west  florida, and see where hemingway  would sit and drink his booze,     cheaper for a drink there.                                                         Annie

Thank you everyone for the great response.  The shore excursions choked us with prices for a bus ride.  So we decided to walk, our new Sony 72 digital camera for me, the Sony digital camcorder for Jerry & experience Venice the way we like to.  Our friend went on about Harry’s Bar as a focal point & its history. We were told to take a water taxi back to the pier if our feet start barking. We are there 2 days before we set sail. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Been to "VENICE",and found much more interesting things to do then sit > in a bar,and pay $12.00 for a drink, can go to key west  florida, and see > where hemingway  would sit and drink his booze,     cheaper for a drink > there.                                                         Annie

Hi Everyone, This is bad advice unless money is no object.  A water taxi will cost an arm and a leg.  OTOH, a trip on the Varporetto is inexpensive and convenient unless you get on #1 which makes a stop every couple of blocks.  If time is not a concern than even #1 is fine. If you happen to find yourself standing in front of it, then have your picture taken. Other than that there is much more of lasting significance to be seen and done. A letdown in other words. Go up to the top of the Tower and you will be much more satisfied. Try to use the Vaparetto as much as possible. An all day pass is just a few bucks and they go just about everywhere you will want to go. It will be a short walk from the ship but the excitement of being in Venice will mitigate that. Have a great time and you are to be commended for seeking an alternative to overpriced and underdelivered shore excursions. If someone was trying to sell me a bus tour of Venice, I’d run away! There are no roads on the island, so no bus could get around on it! Save your money and do your own walking tour.  See if you can pick up a copy of the National Geographic DestinationMap for Venice (I found it at Barnes and Noble, so it should be easily obtainable).  It is a very handy laminated map of Venice.  It has good markings for points of interest, hotels, and vaporetto stops.  It has a good vaporetto system map also.  Use the vaporetto (the "water busses") instead of the water taxis (taxis are hugely expensive).  One of the things you should do it take the No. 1 vaporetto down through the Grand Canal.  I don’t know where the ship pier is, so I can’t help you with where you are at to get a vaporetto (sorry). Someone else can help with that, I’m sure. Just be sure you have a good, comfortable pair of shoes to wear!  The walkways and footbridges you’ll be on can definitely get to you!  Pick a direction and start walking.  It’s a small island, so you can’t get hopelessly lost.  Just keep looking at the placards on the sides of buildings to get your bearings.  Usually you’ll see a sign pointing the way to "P. San Marco" (Piazza San Marco), "Rialto" (the area around the Rialto Bridge" or something like that.  My husband and I just wandered around aimlessly one of our two days we had in Venice this past January. It was fun to see where we ended up – we’d find what looked like a group of non-tourists and just followed.  Found our way into little areas with nice candy and food shops.  Grab a "lunch" at one of the many little bars around that have sandwiches and focaccias in the windows.  Just point at what you want and pay at the counter (cheaper than if you take a seat). Have fun! – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Thank you everyone for the great response.  The shore excursions > choked us with prices for a bus ride.  So we decided to walk, our new > Sony 72 digital camera for me, the Sony digital camcorder for Jerry & > experience Venice the way we like to.  Our friend went on about > Harry’s Bar as a focal point & its history. Another Harry’s Bar Wet wind on the sidewalk: I’m staring at the rain. Walking up the street, yeah, and walking down again. And my feet are tired and my brain is numb. See that broken neon sign saying, hey, in you come. Got the scent of stale beer hanging, hanging round my head. Old dog in the corner sleeping like he could be dead. A book of matches and a full ashtray. Cigarette left smoking its life away. Another Harry’s bar — or that’s the tale they tell. But Harry’s long gone now, and the customers as well. Me and the dog and the ghost of Harry will make this world turn right. It’ll all turn right. God’s tears on the sidewalk: it’s the mother of all rain. But in the thick blue haze of Harry’s, you will feel no pain. And you will feel no soft hand slipping on your knee. You don’t have to pay for memories, they will all come free. Another Harry’s bar — or that’s the tale they tell. But Harry’s long gone now, and the customers as well. Me and the dog and the ghost of Harry will make this world turn right. It’ll all turn right. Now when Harry was a young man, Harry was so debonair. He walked a bouncy step in his shiny shoes. And when Harry was a young man, well, Harry could walk on air. He mixed a mean cocktail and he talked you through the late news. You want to hear some great news? Harry’s still here. Wet wind on the sidewalk: I’m still staring at the rain. Walking up the street, and I’m walking down again. And my feet are tired and my brain is numb. See that broken neon sign saying, hey, in you come. Another Harry’s bar — or that’s the tale they tell. But Harry’s long gone now, and the customers as well. Me and the dog and the ghost of Harry will make this world turn right. It’ll all turn right. Another Harry’s bar. And another Harry’s bar. And another, and another Harry’s bar.

Don’t bother.  It is a tremendous disappointment.  There is so much more to see and do.  I love Venice.  It is Number One on my "must return" list.  Get a map…walk…eat lots of gelato…shop…enjoy!

Thank you again everyone.  We have axed Harry’s as a must see & if we pass it during our 2 days of walking, talking, eating & photos galore, then we can say we were there.  Drinking isn’t big on our list either. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Don’t bother.  It is a tremendous disappointment.  There is so much more > to see and do.  I love Venice.  It is Number One on my "must return" > list.  Get a map…walk…eat lots of gelato…shop…enjoy!

Brenda, When is your cruise? S’nd I

Response:

May 17th. After Coral in October moved to December then cancelled, moved to Island & that was cancelled, moved to Grand doing Med & that was staying in Carib, so we get a mini suite for less money than a BD on Grand sailing the Golden.  It is our dream cruise for half the price we were quoted on the Grand when we bought 2 deposits (Coral PC & Grand Med). – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Brenda, > When is your cruise? > S’nd I
