FS: Fender '57 Precision Bass (Reissue)

Question:

Hey Michael, I believe ya, dude. Sure is weird, though, huh? What the hell were they thinking? * Sent from RemarQ http://www.remarq.com The Internet’s Discussion Network * The fastest and easiest way to search and participate in Usenet – Free!

One more thought on the serial number deal: the 20K series was precedeed by a 0 in the fifties, thereby making originals carry six digit serial numbers. The 30K series went back to five digits. Maybe they figured five digit serial numbers in the 20K range had never been used so it would be OK to use ‘em now. Just a thought… * Sent from RemarQ http://www.remarq.com The Internet’s Discussion Network * The fastest and easiest way to search and participate in Usenet – Free!

Damn if I know.  But I just now took some pics with my digital camera, the whole thing, front, back, neck, and a good closeup of the neck plate that I’ll be happy to email to anyone who asks. Man… it DOES look pretty.  :-( But I’ve got a Sadowsky PJ5 in the works, so that will probably dull the pain of selling this beauty a bit.  ;-) Michael —

"Serial number is 21816" Fender is re-using serial numbers???!! Why do I doubt this? * Sent from RemarQ http://www.remarq.com The Internet’s Discussion Network * The fastest and easiest way to search and participate in Usenet – Free!

->"Serial number is 21816" -> ->Fender is re-using serial numbers???!! Why do I doubt this? Yeah, I know it looks like an original ‘57 serial number, but that is, in fact, what is stamped on the neck plate.  When I bought the bass originally I did quite a bit of email with Bill Bolton in Australia about it, (Bill is a noted authority on Fender basses and the ages thereof), but there’s no getting around it… that’s what it says. I pulled the neck off to check dates there, and found the pocket inside the body has a stamp that says "1993", and pencilled on the end of the neck itself is "3-2-94". The serial number plate has that number, very clearly.  And it’s not preceded by a V, or a -, or anything, just that number.  I dunno why it’s like that, I bought it used and it was that way when I bought it.  I couldn’t figure it out and neither could Bill. If you don’t believe me, you’re welcome to inspect it. Michael —

Fender ‘57 Precision Bass Reissue You want that classic Precision Bass sound?  This is IT. This axe captures the late 50s P-Bass sound exactly, and is in excellent condition.  Serial number is 21816. Two tone sunburst, gold anodized pickguard, large chrome covers over the bridge and pickup, finger rest in the wrong place (back in ‘57, people played with their thumb, and I don’t mean slapping), maple fingerboard, maple parts nicely "yellowed".  It even has the original style "backwards" tuners and that stupid strap button on the back of the headstock. There’s a photo of a very similar one at the following URL: http://www.fender.com/gear/basses/precision/amervintage/amervintagepb… …although the one there is "White Blonde" and mine is the 2-Color Sunburst nitro-cellulose laquer finish, which I find much nicer looking.  This URL shows an original ‘58 which looks much more like mine: http://cm.stanford.edu/~ns/58pbass.html I currently have a Duncan "Antiquity" P-Bass pickup set installed in it, but it comes with the original ‘57 P reissue pickup set too.  It’s currently strung with Thomastik Jazz Flats, which contribute more to that late 50s vibe.  Comes with a brand new Fender tweed hardshell case (literally, I got the case about 2 weeks ago and it’s never been out of the house), and a Levy’s gigbag.  Levy’s wide suede leather strap and Schaller straplocks also included. I’m selling it because although I love the sound, I have become firmly addicted to having five strings and I miss the B terribly whenever I play this axe.  (My other bass is a Lakland Deluxe 55/94 five string). These basses sell new, at a discount, for $1100 plus.  I am asking $750 FIRM for this prime example.  I’m looking for a local, San Francisco bay area sale, as I will not ship it.
