Question:

"It’s a small world after all…" <g>  I knew someone who went to Purdue from ‘69 – ‘73.  His brother’d been there before him, too.  Back then, I wasn’t much interested in graphic arts, but am now; some sort of a dual degree, in graphic arts & teaching would’ve been flexible.  Oh, well… ;-) And I did really enjoy the art courses I took, plus they’ve come in handy, re: application in tchg. Your last sentence made me think of a friend in college: I ran into him one day when he had to finally, once & for all, declare a major, & he was still debating the decision right before the meeting w/ his advisor.  He said he was trying to choose between philosophy & psychology; all I could think was, "Why don’t you just toss a coin, considering that what you’re going to actually do w/ either one is kind of hazy?" <g> Cathy — "Staccato signals of constant information…" ("The Boy in the Bubble")  Paul Simon

That sounds like what I did, but opposite!  How was elementary ed when you took it?  I must say I was quite disappointed with the 2 years I spent there… the classes were very mediocre (no effort yielded high ninties – and I am certainly no genius), and I was the only person out of 150 who had and was volunteering in classrooms/had real experience!  It was a very odd faculty, because it seemed as though no one was really "into" it, and the practicums weren’t until the very final year.  That’s not the reason why I went into art ed. — but if I didn’t I would have certainly found a different university program for elementary ed. elsewhere!  I don’t know if it is some "new wave" of teaching prospective teachers – or just where I went. The same is up here – there are going to be many teaching positions opening – I think it is just starting to happen up here.  They predicted it would happen about five years ago, but it didn’t… it is so weird – leave school to be a teacher when job prospects were awful and no one was landing these promised jobs.  Go into school to enter a field that was booming… soon graduating and it is now crashing.  Arg!  The unpredictability of life… why I should not play the stock market!  I have bad karma!  =) Jepo. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> — > "Staccato signals of constant information…" > ("The Boy in the Bubble")  Paul Simon > > <snipped> > > >Hey, me too!  What are you studying? > > >Jepo. > > Jepo, > > I’m a communications major at California State Dominguez Hills.  This is > my > > last semester…  yay!!  I’ll be finished with my courses in December > and > I’ll > > walk in the ceremony come May.  I’m really excited about finishing, but > I > have > > no idea what I’ll be doing with my degree!  I’m taking the CBEST next > month and > > I’ll probably do a little substitute teaching after graduation to see if > I > > enjoy being in a classroom.  Though I could actually go into my field… > My > > study emphasis is Public Relations. > Right on – not much time left!  Congratulations!  But forgive me (being > Canadian and all) – not too sure what the CBEST is, but obviously a > teaching > certificate?   I think PR must be a real interesting field… and heck, > seems like something people need more and more these days!  Which grade > level would you be teaching at? > > How about you? > It have been a long haul… partly due to my indeciseiveness I guess. Many of my education courses were mediocre to crummy.  Otoh, most of my Art courses were good to excellent, & I truly enjoyed them.  As a teacher, what really irks me is that there is no education course which gives you – in a nutshell – the practical, nitty-gritty info that one will need & would find to be useful.  Ex: the most common methods used in different districts for attendance. I had to keep a complete register when I first started in the early 70’s, now keep attendance cards, & will soon be doing it via a PC program.  I had *no* idea that one had to make various coding marks for tardy, abs. because of illness, abs. because of dentist appt., abs. for a family crisis, illegally abs., out for a portion of the day, etc.  Another thing that bugged me was how heavily the courses were into theory, Vs. the practical – what works in the *real* <g> world. > It was a very odd > faculty, because it seemed as though no one was really "into" it, and the > practicums weren’t until the very final year.

I’m trying to remember… ;-)  I had one practicum, called "Participation" for several weeks – I think in the fall semester of my Senior year, then student taught for 14 weeks – two experiences of 7 wks. each – in the spring semester of my last year.  I’ve been the co-operating teacher for 5 student teachers over the years, & am slated to have one next winter or spring. Most have been very good to excellent, thank goodness, w/ great work ethics. >  That’s not the reason why I > went into art ed. — but if I didn’t I would have certainly found a > different university program for elementary ed. elsewhere!  I don’t know if > it is some "new wave" of teaching prospective teachers – or just where I > went.

I’ve seen the pendulum,re: teaching methods – swing from one side – way to the other side, back again, etc. over the years, but the pendulum never stops in the middle – which drives me batty. > The same is up here – there are going to be many teaching positions > opening – I think it is just starting to happen up here.  They predicted it > would happen about five years ago, but it didn’t… it is so weird – leave > school to be a teacher when job prospects were awful and no one was landing > these promised jobs.  Go into school to enter a field that was booming… > soon graduating and it is now crashing.  Arg!  The unpredictability of > life… why I should not play the stock market!  I have bad karma!  =) > Jepo.

When I went into teaching/college in ‘68, there were plenty of openings. But, it closed up – all-of-a-sudden, by the next year.  As a result, both I and a friend I met in college switched over from Art Ed. to El. Ed. in the middle of our Sophomore year, for practical reasons; both of us retained a concentration in Art, though.  We both got tchg. jobs upon graduation, but it wasn’t particularly easy. The first wave of large number of retirements of the baby boomers occurred in my particular district about 3 years ago.  The next wave – I think a larger one – will be in about 5 years, when I – and a lot of other teachers – will have reached 55 in my district, & therefore will be eligible.  Whether or not we actually all retire in one fell swoop will depend upon how big of an incentive we’ll be offered by the district (IOW – get rid of a slew of the teachers on the upper end of the salary schedule & replace us w/ all new teachers for less than half the price); how feasible it’ll be financially. Thank you, Candace.  That close-up was my favorite, too.  The detail was really nice, but more importantly, she’s just got an adorable little face.  :)   I bought an Intel Deluxe PC Camera at Best Buy for $59.  I would have liked to buy a nice digital camera, (as opposed to the PC camera which is plugged into my computer with a 5-6 foot cord) but I just couldn’t afford it right now.  I am a starving student, after all, and I like to spend what little money I have on other things;  like the $30 bed I bought for Gustav last week.  He refuses to go anywhere near it!  Anyway, I believe my PC camera was a good purchase and I’m pleased with the quality.   ~Kaare, Gustav and little Aurora… Pictures of my Gustav: http://www.geocities.com/gustavkitty Most recent pictures of little Aurora: http://www.geocities.com/gustavkitty/webcam/index.html

Holly, Indeed!  It is wonderful having 2 kitties.  I felt bad about Gustav being an only cat for so long.  Aurora wasn’t "planned".  I was going to wait until after graduation to move to a bigger place and then get a companion for Gustav.  I’m so glad Aurora had other plans for us, because Gustav truly loves her and I think he’s happy to have a kitty friend. ~Kaare, Gustav and little Aurora… Pictures of my Gustav: http://www.geocities.com/gustavkitty Most recent pictures of little Aurora: http://www.geocities.com/gustavkitty/webcam/index.html

Sethran, Hahaha!  There is usually quite a bit of mutual grooming, but Aurora is always the first one to fall asleep.  I could also get pictures of her grooming ME since she does that so often, too.  She thinks I’m a kitty, I think, and she’s always licking my face.  Although I consider it an honor, her rough tongue doesn’t exactly feel good.  :)   ~Kaare, Gustav and little Aurora… Pictures of my Gustav: http://www.geocities.com/gustavkitty Most recent pictures of little Aurora: http://www.geocities.com/gustavkitty/webcam/index.html

Right on – not much time left!  Congratulations!  But forgive me (being Canadian and all) – not too sure what the CBEST is, but obviously a teaching certificate?   I think PR must be a real interesting field… and heck, seems like something people need more and more these days!  Which grade level would you be teaching at? > How about you?

It have been a long haul… partly due to my indeciseiveness I guess.  Did 2 years of elementary education, then moved cities (where there was no elementary ed degree) – had to go into a "real" field to become a teacher, so went into art education (turned out to mostly take studio/history). Almost immediately found out about graphic arts/computer etc, and decided I wanted to do that when I finish (long story as to why not teaching anymore, though I still think it was what I was "meant" to do).  So I gradded Aug. 00 and then came to Vancouver to go to VFS (vfs.com), and I will finish mid Feb.  Granted, as mentioned in some other post where I dragged it a bit off topic – the industry kind of sucks – but at least doing what I wanted to do. Hopefully things will turn for the better =)  6 years, almost done… Thanks for sharing!  Always like to hear what others are up to… Jepo. PS – at school the other day I heard in passing that one of the teachers "was sick of seeing people’s cat sites" – which gave me the sudden drive to FINISH my cat site, and get it out there.  I actually felt really offended, though it could have been a joke or something… or taken out of context. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> ~Kaare, Gustav and little Aurora… > Pictures of my Gustav: > http://www.geocities.com/gustavkitty > Most recent pictures of little Aurora: > http://www.geocities.com/gustavkitty/webcam/index.html
