Taking the wheel off might well make it easier to see through the hole. I’ve never tried it with the wheel on. You don’t need much force to turn the adjuster. — *Nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool.      RIP Acorn

All I see around the bottom is a small spring. It might help if I knew what I was looking for. Do you have a digital camera and some time by any chance? Also, I cant imagine being able to exert much force on something in the space provided by removing a lug nut. Is there a way to do this with the wheel off, or will that not help? Thanks, Richard

On the 2001 5 series you "pinch" the top of the plastic boot trim that the leather fits on to, or just lever the top out, but NOT the bottom, as that has a plastic "tongue" to retain it, and then lift the whole boot assembly upwards. Don’t lever the bottom out as you will snap the tongue. Nick

It says 12 clicks in the TIS. But when I did mine I didn’t have the TIS, so I just backed it off till it cleared. On the presumption that if it rubbed slightly, it wouldn’t do so for long. ;-) It’s also much easier to tighten the cog than loosen it due to the offset from the access hole. — *When did my wild oats turn to prunes and all bran?      RIP Acorn

Response:

Hello,         Could someone give me some details on how to tighten up the parking brake. I took off one of the lug nuts, turned the wheel, and for the life of me, I didn’t see a single screw (although I did see a bunch of bolt heads). Also, how do I take off the parking brake handle boot, just yank? Thanks, Richard

Well, now that I looked at the old response again, I’ll just look around the bottom, I’ll be sure to find it. My question now is…Dave, did you mean to say turn back 12 clicks or turn back 1-2 clicks? I know they are completely different cars, but on my 1985 Mercedes I turn back 3 clicks, so 12 just seems a bit much. Richard

It’s not a screw, but an edgeways on cog – you lever it up or down with a screwdriver. It’s at the bottom, just slightly forward of vertical. A torch with a fine beam might help – I’d agree it’s not easy to see. But it’s bright metal, so should stand out. > Also, how do I take off the parking brake handle boot, just > yank?

I think it may vary with the type of trim. On mine you first remove a cover on the side of the transmission tunnel. — *Ham and Eggs: Just a day’s work for a chicken, but a lifetime commitment      RIP Acorn
