concorde water pump and timing belt
Question:
>>REAR timing cover? On a Concorde? >Yes, 3.5L engines have a 2 piece front and rear timing cover.
Ahh. I wondered…
Response:
If that’s all, yes. Typically this is a $550.00 repair max. Chilon labor time guide lists this repair at 3.9 labor hrs. plus a .6 hr for pressure test. Just hope you didn’t get is hot and warp the heads. Parts alone will run you about $3000
Response:
Yes, on the frt of the engine on 3.5s only.
Response:
Even so, $1200 is way out of line. the dealer I used to work at would do the normal job for just about $550 plus taxes. That was with the tenisioner. It’s not an expensive part after all! With the r+r of the timing cover, I would expect to paya little more, but not more than a $100. I’m not familiar with the exchange rate, but the parts to do the job run to about $150 US. Labor is about an hour (thats me doing it myself, a pro mechanic should be able to do it faster than I can). My guess is that it should easily be under $300 US out the door. — Stephen G. Lacker sglacker at texas dot net "Turn off your blinding fog lights, hang up, and DRIVE!"

Must be a 3.3L engine. 3.5 water pump is driven by the timing belt. > Must have done it when I replaced the belt, but that was 20,000km ago. > So, this pump apparently does not care which way it’s turning. > Temperature has always been OK, even on the hottest days with A/C > running. I routed it the correct way to-day.
As I recall, the 3.3 pump uses a straight-vane centrifugal impeller, which itself doesn’t care which way it turns. It would be substantially less efficient turning the wrong way, though, because even though the impeller will work either direction the contours of the housing are shaped to smooth the water flow with the impeller spinning the correct way, and would impede the flow with it turning the wrong way. It would still work well enough that if the rest of the cooling system is healthy the engine wouldn’t overheat. The 3.5 uses a curved-vane impeller that would take a MUCH bigger performance hit if you spun it the wrong way- but of course thats not possible since you cannot route the timing belt the wrong way and expect the engine to run at all! — Stephen G. As an interesting aside, I admired the picture I took of my ‘94 Concorde engine with my new digital camera. Taking a closer look, I saw that the serpentine belt was routed over the water pump pulley instead of under it causing the pump to rotate in the wrong direction. Must have done it when I replaced the belt, but that was 20,000km ago. So, this pump apparently does not care which way it’s turning. Temperature has always been OK, even on the hottest days with A/C running.
