Best non-toxic metal for bird stand?
Question:
Exactly. I just wondered if there were other options other than powder coating which seems to be acknowledged as very good for birds. But a little much for lil ol me to work with (in a living room!). What as I building? Well it involves (in a room about 12 feet wide) supporting long branches on each wall at the end of the room sweeping up towards the ceiling and over to intersect with each other. I want the branches to move when the birds walks on it like in nature. Not artificially stiff due to them being supported at both ends. Wouldn’t it be easier to draw it ??? :) Gotta get that digital camera.
I don’t know of anything wrong with it. A lot of cages have used it for a long time. My guess is they were asking because they wanted to do it at home. Powder coating is a little involved for the home work shop. (Frank) Hang on a sec, what’s wrong with powder coating now? Does anyone have any links for info?
The best thing to use would be stainless steel. It would be expensive and hard to work with though. The next best thing would be steel that had not been zinc coated. I’m not sure what it is your trying to build but you could have a look at some scrap yards to see what they have. As an alternative to powder coating there are some non toxic paints. Preparing the metal correctly is important for them to last. Looking for advice on what is the least (best?) non-toxic metal to use for making a bird stand. Or, is there a way to coat metal (other than powder coating)? Good designs via websites would be great too. Also, is there an easy way to test for lead, zinc or other toxic metals? Perhaps an easy chemical test like you could drop some liquid on the metal and if it changes color, it tells you if that particular metal is present.
