A Lowes customer service experience

Question:

If you have the time and money to deal with the hassle, you could buy the doors at home depot.  Then you could present the receipt to Lowes (let them argue with that!), get the discount, and then return the doors to Home Depot. And if you use a credit card, the return credit would probably show up before you had to pay the charge. Worth it for big ticket items…

The only time I ever took a box store up on that offer was for a cordless DeWalt drill for Father’s Day.  Lowe’s had Home Depot by $20 on the lesser 12V DeWalt kit, Home Depot called and verified the price, and I bought it at Home Depot for the Lowe’s price minus 10% of the difference.  It was painless. —

>"That price was a clearance price and we do not match prices on clearance

items." One of my rare trips to HD for something I needed… a 100′ roll of 48" screen. I get to the nearby "box" and find that they are no longer doing 100′ rolls of anything 48" and smaller (just prepackaged 80", 15′ & 25′ lengths). So while I am bitching to the nimrod clerk about how this is just another reason to never set foot in the store again… he digs out a dusty old roll of 48" old stock. It’s on close-out he sez and I’ll even save dome $$. It rings up at $.01 ( a penny). I asked about the logic behind that and the cashier comments that "all their close-out stuff rings up $.01 cent." I wonder if Lowe’s will give me 10% off that price, I could use the change next time I buy gas and for once pay the exact 10th’s of a cent w/o rounding up <G>.

I spoke with the manager today.  They called Home Depot and they said that they had no such doors in stock and couldn’t give them a price quote.  Mind you, I was just there yesterday and they did have the doors in stock.  The manager did offer to match their price, but did not give a 10% discount. I suppose it wasn’t their fault Home Depot was uncooperative.  Next time I find a lower price, I will bring a digital camera.

Actually knowing how Home Depot works in my area, this does not seem unreasonable that the door was not in stock.  I recall seeing a product on say Tuesday and then I went back to buy it on Wednesday only to find they no longer had it in stock and was on order.   Both Lowes and HD tend to keep most items (except wood and other non specialty items) in low inventory.  I would call this a smart business move.   I think that the price plus 10% discount is great for the consumer, it has paid off for me. — leroy

Here’s a customer service experience I wasn’t expecting. About ten weeks ago I received a promotional insert with my Fleet VISA bill. The insert said that if I charged a minimum of $150 at Lowes between the specified dates, I would receive a $20 Lowes Gift Card in the mail within six weeks. After ten weeks I still had not received the gift card, so I brought the charge receipt and promotional insert to the local store where I had made the purchase. I fully expected to be told by the local store that they didn’t know anything about the offer and that I would have to contact the "corporate office". Indeed, the head cashier at the customer service desk didn’t know anything about the offer, so she called the store manager. I repeated my story to the store manager and commented that I realized I would probably have to contact the corporate or district office to get it resolved. Much to my surprise and delight he said "no, we can take care of it here". The store manager turned me over to the Assistant Store Manager who authorized the immediate issue of a Gift Card! — Shoals Symphony Orchestra: http://www.dreamwater.org/music/sso/ News you can use: http://www.newsmax.com/

<story deleted> OK, since I bash the big orange box store all too often here (not that they don’t deserve it)… I’ll post a positive experience. I’m always looking for a good buy on replacement cordless tool batteries (I’ve got tons of them for me and my installers). Home Depot put out a sale flyer in January or Febuary that had a business card size box (on the page with the cordless tools) claiming they were (and I paraphrase) "a one stop complete source for all your cordless battery needs." Well, that just ain’t so round my neck-o-the-woods. Not only did they not have any of the common batteries I needed, they did not even stock them (or plan on stocking them) in the stores. I called every store in my area, same "ain’t got em… don’t plan to stock em" answer at all of them. It didn’t seem to matter that these same stores sold the tools that took the type/size batteries I needed. So I fired off an e-mail to Atlanta and mentioned that they might want to remove that particular "statement" from their ads. Cause not only were they far from a complete source, they didn’t even stock all the batteries to fit the tools they sold! I got as phone call within three days. They asked for the model numbers of the batteries I was seeking and then sent them to me via UPS. Home Depot picked up the tab for the batteries and shipping. It was a respectable amount of $$ I was fixing to spend on nicad tool batteries… and _free_ is always something to smile about.

I just had an experience at Lowe’s myself. Both Lowe’s and Home Depot offer 10% price guarantees.  If you find a lower price, the store will match it and discount it 10%.  As a result, their prices are mostly identical. However, I wanted to buy a prehung set of double doors, in addition to some other building materials.  Home Depot charges $112 and Lowe’s charges $121.  I decide to go with Lowe’s since they should offer the price $112 – $11.20.  I shop around and record the other things I want. At the checkout, I am told that the price has to be verified.  The lady calls the millwork dept. to call and verify it.  They call her back and she tells me: "That price was a clearance price and we do not match prices on clearance items."  I still purchased it from Lowe’s, since I had planned on getting other items from them. The next day, I am at Home Depot picking something up.  I go by the doors.  As I had guessed and remembered, there was nothing at all to indicate it was a clearance item.  In other words, it wasn’t. Is this a common experience at these stores?  Both have huge signs everywhere proclaiming "guaranteed lowest prices" but when you take them (in this case, Lowe’s) up to it, all they have to do is say "that item was a clearance item."  I can imagine they could also refuse to match prices if the products were not identical, but in my case, they were. I will go there tomorrow and see if they will assist me.  I have already had to deal with incorrectly delivered items.
