Photo recommendations on safari please
Question:
> Hello, > We are planning a trip to Kenya and Tanzania, can anyone please > recommend what to bring in turns of photo equipment? Specifically: > 1. is it recommended to bring a zoom lens?
Yes, don’t leave home without it. 70 or 80-300 mm > 2. should I also bring a tripod? I’m wondering if one will remain in > the safari vehicle, how do you use the tripod?
You won’t likely use a tripod. Bring a beanbag or similar to lay on the lip of the top of the vehicle to steady the camera on long shots > 3. what kind of film is recommended?
I take mostly ASA 200 36 exp. and some ASA400 24 exp. > Thank you in advance for your time.

Harlan, Have you seen a Masai warrior lately? I just about fell off my chair when I read this. I can well imagine your fright!! >We were scared out of our wits when a Masai warrior, >steel-tipped spear in
hand, stepped from the shadows >into the middle of the path in front of us. We stared at >each other. I pondered flight. >"Jambo," I said. >"Jambo," he replied, then stepped off the path. I learned >the next day
that he was the watchman — Julie D. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –

Yes, for sure. I find a 57 – 300mm most useful. > 2. should I also bring a tripod? I’m wondering if one will remain in > the safari vehicle, how do you use the tripod?
You really can’t use a tripod in the vehicle on a brochure safari. Even if you are on a private safari it is very awkward. Depending on your itinerary, you may be able to use one in certain places, e.g. Lake Nakuru. However, you can use a window mount or clamp. My window mount opens wide enough to fit on the roof of the vehicle also. You can use a beanbag. Most of the time, I use a rolled-up sweater. > 3. what kind of film is recommended?
Your favourite. It’s greyer and lower in light than you’d imagine a lot of the time, especially in July-August. An 85mm-210mm zoom lens is about right. More costly ones have lower f-stops. Max of 300mm in a fixed-length lens. tripod? I say a beanbag instead. film? lots of opinions on this one, and the right answer depends on your end use. Slide film is so much better, but most everyday folks want prints, not slides. —–= Posted via Newsfeeds.Com, Uncensored Usenet News =—– http://www.newsfeeds.com – The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! —–== Over 80,000 Newsgroups – 16 Different Servers! =—–

Bring at least twice as much film as you think you will need. My first safari I used nearly 40 rolls. You get a bit more selective as you go on but I still come back with 36 shots of one ellie! Don’t forget to take some of the landscape as well – it’s easy to forget some scene setters when you are surrounded by amazing animals. Joanna

We have been in Kenia in 1999, and we use the following photo equipment: One camera with a 75- 300 mm One camera with a 35 -70 mm Films used: Slide E100SW Photo: ASA400 We have a tripod but it was not able to use it. Remeber to have enough films and bateries, is not dificult to find bateries and films but they are not very cheap. Pep & Antonia Cifre

It’s my experience that a tripod is extremely difficult to use in a safari vehicle. There just isn’t enough room to set it up. A beanbag would be more usefull. > 3. what kind of film is recommended?
That depends on the max. aperture of your lens. I always take Fuji Realla (100ISO) film and some 400 and 800 ISO film for in the morning. I can do a midroll rewind with my camera so changing from 100 to 400 ISO isn’t a problem for me. If your camera can’t do a mid-roll rewind then 200ISO would probably be a good choice.
