FAA Considering Ban On Carry-On Luggage/advanced seat assignemtns
Question:
Right from the start they should have the SIZER either at the gate & you drop your carryon in it to see if it is acceptable & check it if not. Or at the Xray, which we’ve had at some airports where the item can’t get thru it so you check it. But then you also have the strollers, buggies, and other crazy items coming aboard that should be checked. A camera bag is small, as is a normal purse, but some backpacks are painful to folks who get it in the face when the jerk spins around to talk to someone as well as their size that won’t fit under a seat! And then the duffle bags!!!! – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->I don’t see the reasoning to any of this? Ken, My problem with carry on items are for the people that think they must take these huge carry on’s that are too large and should have been checked below. I cannot count how many times I have witnessed individuals trying to cram items in the overhead bins and struggle with the end result of having to have the flight attendant check the item and send down to the luggage area. Worse yet are the people that bring aboard two carry on luggage items, a briefcase or lap top and sometimes a purse. This is ridiculous. The airlines have a size and usually a limit of two carry ons per person but I seldom see them enforce this. I believe that if the airlines continue to allow carry on items then they should allow only one carry on per person and enforce the size limit. I do not have a problem with carry on items if they are within the regulations but I seldom see this enforced. I know everyone may not agree with this but that is my opinion for what it’s worth. I have insulin-dependant diabetes and need my insulin, syringe and several medications at all times. I am sure the FCC would let diabetics carry this stuff (if they could prove the condition, another hassle) just as people needing oxygen etc. could bring it onboard. Let us not get carried away here, folks.

I would be thrilled with carry on’s being eliminated. I have seen people trying to bring on pieces of luggage that clearly belong below in the luggage compartment. It also takes much longer to load and unload the plane. Now on the subject of seat assignments, I do not like that at all. I guess we shall see. Gordon

Nobody said you can’t sit by your husband, it’s not going to be a random seating, they just don’t want anybody getting in a seat they knew about for months that somebody else could have left something for them in. If you and your husband show up on time, they will probably arrange for you to sit together. If you have status with the airline, you will probably be in the status section. They will probably have assigned you the seats when you make the reservation, blocked out the middle seat if you are on an airline that does so, they just won’t be able to tell you the seats until you get to the counter. If there is any chance at all somebody will leave something for someone else on a plane, then I am more then willing to give up my favorite seats for one across the aisle or something to help prevent it.

It’s $2,500 per passenger not $300 per bag (domestic) and $9.07 per pound (up to $635 per bag, for two bags) international, and if that’s not enough you can always declare the value and pay a small fee to cover whatever you have in there, just as you can do now.

pardon me for sounding like a person with my "head in the sand". i am not ‘up’ on all details of american commercial air rules of bag and effects replacement. i am canadian and believe that security in airports should be tight enough that we don’t have to board airplanes naked and without any personal items. (slight exaggeration) if you give yourself some time beyond the events of the 11th you may become reattached to your personal belongings. at some point it might matter to you that your wife/husband/mother/father/child etc. have that item that is important to them … never mind the diabetic who REQUIRES their needle and insulin with them in-flight (or do you want diabetics to stop flying for fear that they will jab others with their needle?) do you really think that travelling with nothing to amuse or comfort us will make air rage decline? give that a thought, sandy. i don’t mean to upset all those affected by recent events but, geez, could we please think about the long term when we all go back to flying often and often for several hours.

I think this would work only if there was a locked compartment in the body of the plane where carryon items could be CAREFULLY placed – or perhaps some sort of cart into which each passenger could personally stow items (or watch someone else do it) that could then be placed in the hold. I stopped carrying a purse on planes about a year ago – instead I wear one of those vests with two inside pockets, used for wallet and passport, and several outside ones where I keep kleenex, pen and pencil, and any other small item I might need. But we still have to carry a laptop (I don’t use it onboard, but can you imagine what a baggage handler might do to it?!), my very expensive camera (same comment!), and a little case with the medications and grooming items we really need on arrival. In addition, the small duffel containing the camera has jewelry, a folding umbrella, and enough underwear and stuff to get by if our luggage is misplaced. OT, but by the way, limiting carryons really seems to have worked. We’ve been on some loaded flights within the last few months, and there hasn’t been a one where anyone had a problem stowing items carried onboard. We never have but a small duffel in the overhead. Any other items go under the seats in front of us. Gail Koontz Retired in my home state 836 Mallard Rd. . . . and loving it!

I would be thrilled with carry on’s being eliminated. I have seen people trying to bring on pieces of luggage that clearly belong below in the luggage compartment. It also takes much longer to load and unload the plane. Now on the subject of seat assignments, I do not like that at all. I guess we shall see. Gordon

I don’t see the reasoning to any of this? The airlines are complaining that the passenger loads are down, ending meal service to cut cost and now make it even more miserable to the flyer by not allowing a carry on and choice of seating? I agree there should have been a limitation to carry on items a long time ago! I have been on too many flights and seen people lugging on pieces of luggage that should have been checked and then delaying the push back from the gate while the flight attendants scramble looking for bin space! Why don’t they just repaint all the planes with the word GREYHOUND because that is what it will be like…a BUS atmosphere in the skies!!! Len…

I just went on FAA site and they said nothing about not having carry-ons. They only stressed on the point of knives. I’m not sure where you are getting this info?

Oh the above comment is so tempting. Okay ….. I’ll be good. I won’t say what I’m thinking. June June, Go ahead and post what you were thinking. I book all of my air travel on line with Delta. I do not fly cheap airlines like Air Tran that will not give a seat assignment until you arrive at the airport. I will pay a little more for the convenience. Do you have a problem with that?

I agree with you that Delta to Hawaii every year, for free with the Skymiles AMEX card & CO to just about everywhere else since they are non-stop.
