Isn’t "Socialist Realist" oxymoronic? Ed R.

Response:

I plan to visit Hong Kong via American Airlines from Dallas to Tokyo and Cathay Pacific from Tokyo to Hong Kong. American Airlines allows two pieces of carry-on luggage (in practice). Does Cathay Pacific allow two pieces as well? Thanks in advance.

Response:

From Cathay Pacific’s website: Baggage Information Cabin Baggage Each passenger (except infant) is allowed to carry one piece of cabin baggage free, including any duty-free goods. The cabin bag must not exceed 56cm x 36cm x 23cm (22" x 14" x 9") in size and 5kg (11lbs) in weight. First Class and Business Class passengers may also carry one garment bag (with no more than 20cm (8") in thickness when folded in half and 5kg (8lbs) in weight) OR one laptop computer. In addition to their cabin baggage, passengers may carry on board the following items: Small handbag or purse, coat, umbrella, walking stick, small camera or binoculars, and infant food for inflight consumption. Baby buggies and adult wheelchairs have to be checked-in as hold baggage. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > I plan to visit Hong Kong via American Airlines from Dallas to Tokyo and > Cathay Pacific from Tokyo to Hong Kong. In theory No.  In practice, never a problem unless they are a monster size. If you travel in Business or First, you aren’t going to get any hassle at all. > I plan to visit Hong Kong via American Airlines from Dallas to Tokyo and > Cathay Pacific from Tokyo to Hong Kong. And of course, I have to add that any thing having to do with communism, (Posters of Mao, the complete works of Lenin, statues of Marx and Engels, etc) are always welcomed on board! Glory to the Central State Comittee!! -Erik

In my experience, you could bring a herd of wild elephants on board and they wouldn’t bat an eyelash. miguel — Hit The Road! Photos, tales, and tips from around the world: http://u.nu

Right.  In BKK there is a sign with some kind of limit by which I was well over – no dramas (a large daypack, a massive camera bag and a rolled-up painting).   It seems only the N.A. airlines are anal about the size of carryons – Thai has a 7 kg/1 pc. limit, at least on the one (and hopefully only) flight I have taken with them (PNH-BKK), but they didn’t even look at my menagerie.

Only NA airlines are anal about this? Sorry, in my book the Anal Award goes to LH — a 5 kg limit and they weigh everything fastidiously. At least that’s been my sad experience.

I haven’t experienced this but my brother did and he is not appy about it either.

What especially infuriates me is when they provide the ‘reason’ — that the overhead bins can’t support more than 15 or so kg. I just wish one day they’d actually LOOK into those bins and see the nice little label specifying the weight capacity (WAAAAAAY over 15 kg). Grrr. Oh, to add insult to injury — I stow my carry-on ON THE FLOOR! :|

Doesn’t BA make a fuss about this too? Ed R.

Maybe I was lucky but I never had the problem on BA. (Used to fly them a lot, haven’t since they and US got divorced.)

Response:

Quite right Erik. Those rare big portraits are now highly valued collectors items. Too valuable and risky to keep in the cargo hold! Sorry, but I will tell you that the Groningen Museum in Groningen in the North of the Netherlands has a wonderful retrospective right now entitled "Raint it Red" with all sorts of Chinese Communist ("Socialist Realist") Propaganda Posters. Runs until the end of February. KLM exel flies into GRQ. Check it out! -Erik
