What about putting film in checked luggage? I’m going to be taking a lot of film to Tokyo next week. Would prefer to check the film, for convenience’s sake.

only if you want it fried.  The Xrays on checked luggage are much higher than the carry on machinery and will ruin film.

I have traveled United States domestic twice since 9/11 with a camera bag loaded with a camera, accessories, cell phone, pager, pocket change, my prescription drugs, and some film. No problem at all.

I also carry a camera bag (body/3 lenses/spare battery/5 rolls) inside a backpack, and post-September, I’ve had the bag pulled aside for hand searching all 3 times I’ve taken a flight ex-United States (EWR-bag well searched, EWR-bag somewhat searched, PHL-bag not searched).  It hasn’t been pulled aside as of yet in 3 passes ex-Canada, nor was it searched in 25-ish pre-September ‘01 passes through American, Canadian, or Israeli airport X-ray machines. Matthew :)

Response:

they didn’t like my tape measure (25′) last saturday in SEA until they looked at it.  BTW – if they told me what they were looking for I could have just pulled it out a lot faster.

I don’t see why you would. I generally travel with 2 bodies, several lenses, U/W strobes, etc. and have had no real problems. They frequently want to look open the case and look under the lenses and stuff, but once they’re satisfied that it’s just camera gear, they let me go on my way. Be helpful and nice, and make their job as easy as you can, and you shouldn’t have any problem. As an aside, I just ran a test to see if hand inspection of film is really necessary. On a 4 week trip through Asia, I had my hand luggage x-rayed 13 times. I kept three rolls of film in the camera case (Provia 100, 400, Velvia 50) and let them be x-rayed along with everything else. There was no evidence of any x-ray exposure to the three rolls. Alan
