Wanted: Rottweiler adoption

Question:

I agree with previous posters.  I have an 8 month old and two dogs…youngest dog is just turned 3 and we’ve had him since he was a puppy.  Any change in the household is a HUGE adjustment….for everyone.  No way would most folks be able to handle both at once.  Plus, the dogs you selected are all large, vigorous, strong, and I believe do have a higher incidence of biting.  That said, we have a GSD and he is great with the baby.  If you decide on a dog, definitely go with an adult from rescue…you’ll get a known quantity, including how they are with infants and children.  If you would consider other breeds, both Goldens and Labs are love puppies and easier to train. (I had a lab before the GSD)  I’d avoid highly dominant dogs or really stubborn ones…a mix or purebred. You might also be wanting the puppy because your nurturing instincts are working overtime right now…I know!  I think it really is a case of everything having its season.  I desperately want a lab puppy but know we can’t handle it until the baby is around 3… Good luck. Thanks in advance!    Yes–you are not an experienced working breed owner, and are going    to be raising a brand-new baby.  Do you really want to take on    two major tasks at once?  (Dogs become good with good children    by socialization and training, and that takes time.) avrama & shomer .. nfx v2.7 [C0000] Our pack is led by an alpha bitch-and the dog knows it!

I’ll agree Golden Retrievers are the best dog around. Lucas (mine) was 4 months old when I got him from the rescue shelter. Sure he’a active at 20 months but quiets down in my house. All on his own. A truly wonderful pet… But then I live alone on 6 acres in the country. — Like Annette Funicello? Subscribe to a list about her! http://www.onelist.com/subscribe.cgi/annette Robert M. It is my opnion that you should wait and see how much time you have before you get a dog.  The best times to get a dog are probably a couple of years before you have a child so the dog can be trained or about 4-8 years after.  That is assuming you are looking for a puppy.  With an story.

A bit of advice – lots of folks who are expecting their first child think getting a puppy while mom is home on maternity leave is a great idea. All the hormones are humming in preparation for the new life and nurturing is quite attractive. However, when a new baby arrives it eats up your life to an extent you can hardly believe. Many people who get a pup when pregnant suddenly have an adolescent dog available to a good home shortly after the baby is born. Time and energy are not limitless commodities and the baby will come first. This is not to say *you* cannot do it just that you should really think about it. Perhaps you should consider an adult dog already known to be good with kids and cats and already past the pee/poop/chew/high energy stages so that it will easily adapt to a different level of attention once your baby arrives.
